Sourdough: The Ultimate Guide to Making Delicious Crackers with Discard
If you're anything like me, you're always looking for ways to reduce food waste and make something delicious out of what might otherwise end up in the compost bin. That's why I love sourdough: not only is it a tasty and nutritious bread, but it's also a versatile ingredient that can be used in a variety of ways. Today, we're going to explore one of my favorite uses for sourdough discard: making crackers.
Making crackers with sourdough discard is not only a great way to use up excess starter, but it's also a healthier option than store-bought crackers, which are often loaded with preservatives and other additives. With just three simple ingredients – sourdough discard, olive oil, and herbs – you can make delicious and crunchy crackers that are perfect for snacking or serving with cheese and dips.
Here's the recipe:
Ingredients:
1 cup sourdough discard
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon dried herbs (such as rosemary, thyme, or oregano)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, mix together the sourdough discard, olive oil, and herbs until well combined.
Season the mixture with salt and pepper, to taste.
Spread the mixture onto the prepared baking sheet in a thin, even layer.
Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the crackers are golden brown and crispy.
Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes.
Break the crackers into bite-sized pieces and serve.
These crackers are not only easy to make, but they're also customizable. You can experiment with different herbs and spices to create your own unique flavor combinations. You can also adjust the thickness of the crackers by spreading the mixture thinner or thicker on the baking sheet.
In addition to being delicious, these crackers are also a great way to use up excess sourdough discard. Rather than throwing it away, you can repurpose it into something new and tasty. It's just one of the many ways that sourdough can help reduce food waste and make our kitchens more sustainable.
So the next time you find yourself with excess sourdough discard, give these crackers a try. They're a great snack to have on hand, and they're sure to impress your friends and family. Happy baking!
